Future Seekers II : Refugees and irregular migration in Australia

Description

This book explores Australia's ambivalent legal and political response to "irregular" migration, including the unplanned arrival of people variously known as asylum seekers, "boat people", "illegals", "queue jumpers" and "economic migrants". Part 1 outlines how many people arrive, who they are, where they come from, and why they come. It also compares Australia's experience of irregular migration to that of other countries, in light of the vast global movements of people and increasingly exploitative practices such as people smuggling and people trafficking. The core of the book addresses the complex system of refugee law and policy in Australia. It explains the legal definition of who is a "refugee" and the administrative and judicial procedures for applying this definition to determine refugee status. It traces the changes to law and policy since 2001 following the infamous Tampa affair, the introduction of the "Pacific Strategy", and the extension to West Papuans in 2006 of the policy of interdicting, deflecting, and processing asylum seekers offshore on Nauru and Christmas Island. The final part of this book examines equally controversial laws and policies requiring the mandatory detention of unlawful non-citizens, including the key High Court decisions which confirmed the parliament's power to detain a person indefinitely - and in breach of international human rights law. The living conditions in the detention centres and how Australia's laws compare with other countries are also discussed. Future Seekers II builds on a shorter book by two of the authors in 2002. This book responds to the many changes to refugee and migration law between 2002 and 2006 and its deeper coverage of the issues reflects the growing sophistication of public understanding of - and concern about - refugee issues in Australia.

A Dictionary of American Idioms

Description

More than 8,000 idiomatic words and phrases specific to American-style English are presented in this updated A-to-Z dictionary, complete with definitions and sample sentences. Especially useful for TOEFL test-takers and other students in America for whom English is a second language, this book explains and clarifies many of the similes and metaphors that newcomers to American English find mystifying. It is also useful to native-born Americans who are sometimes confused by regional colloquialisms encountered in reading or on TV. Idioms undergo constant change in every living language, some of them falling out of use, while new words and phrases become part of the standard vocabulary. This dictionary's new fourth edition takes account of the latest idiomatic changes and provides a solid background to informal American English.

Brigid Keenan: Full Marks for Trying: An Unlikely Journey from the Raj to the Rag Trade

Full Marks for Trying: An Unlikely Journey from the Raj to the Rag Trade

Description

Brigid Keenan was never destined to lead a normal life. From her early beginnings - a colourful childhood in India brought to an abrupt end by independence and partition, then a return to dreary post-war England and on to a finishing school in Paris with daughters of presidents and princes - ordinary didn't seem to be her fate. When, as a ten-year-old, she overheard her mother describe her as 'desperately plain', she decided then and there that she had to rely on something different: glamour, eccentricity, character, a career - anything, so as not to end up at the bottom of the pile. And in classic Brigid style, she somehow ended up with them all. Fate often gave Brigid a helping hand - in the late fifties, in her teens, she landed a job as an assistant at the Daily Express in London, and by the tender age of twenty-one she was a Fashion Editor at the Sunday Times. It was the dawn of the swinging sixties, and London was the place to be. Brigid worked with David Bailey and Jean Shrimpton, had her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon, drove around London in a mini-van, covered the Paris Collections and was labelled a 'Young Meteor' by the press. Despite always trying her hardest, Brigid's enthusiasm - and occasional naivete - could lead to embarrassing moments, such as when she turned up to report on the Vietnam war in a mini skirt ...Candid, wickedly funny and surprisingly touching, Full Marks for Trying is a coming-of-age memoir that will delight, entertain, and make you cry with laughter.

The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement. They were alternately known as waste people, offals, rubbish, lazy lubbers, and crackers. By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called clay eaters and sandhillers, known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds. Grievously wounded private detective Charlie Parker investigates a case that has its origins in a Nazi concentration camp during the Second World War. Broken, but undeterred, private detective Charlie Parker faces the darkest of dark forces in a case with its roots in the second world war, and a concentration camp unlike any other ...Recovering from a near-fatal shooting and tormented by memories of a world beyond this one, Parker has retreated to the small Maine town of Boreas to recover. There he befriends a widow named Ruth Winter and her young daughter, Amanda. But Ruth Full Marks for Trying: An Unlikely Journey from the Raj to the Rag Trade pdf has her secrets. She is hiding from the past, and the forces that threaten her have their origins in the Second World War, in a town called Lubko and a concentration camp unlike any other. Old atrocities are about to be unearthed, and old sinners will kill to hide their sins. Now Parker is about to risk his life to defend a woman he barely knows, one who fears him almost as much as she fears those who are coming for her. His enemies believe him to be vulnerable. Fearful. Solitary. But they are wrong. Parker is far from afraid, and far from alone. For something is emerging from the shadows ...

Shakti Gawain: Creative Visualization

Creative Visualization

Description

Creative Visualization has been successfully used in the fields of health, education, business, sports, and the arts for many years. Gawain explains how to use mental imagery and affirmations to produce positive changes in one s life. The book contains meditations and exercises that are aimed at helping the practitioner channel energies in positive directions, strengthen self-esteem, improve overall health, and experience deep relaxation. This is the book that launched a movement. Creative visualization works. Oprah Winfrey"

"When Alice Liddell Hargreaves met Peter Llewelyn Davies at the opening of a Lewis Carroll exhibition in 1932, the original Alice in Wonderland came face to face with the original Peter Pan. In John Logan's remarkable new play, enchantment and reality collide as this brief encounter lays bare the lives of these two extraordinary characters." Bruce Davidson began his love affair with photography at age ten. The son of a hardworking divorced mother, he was a loner who disliked school and had difficulty conforming to the world round him. His camera released him from the boundaries of his youth and opened the doors to a lifetime's work. Vicki Goldberg's authoritative text explores the wide range of his vision and technique, and reveals how his work has played a critical Creative Visualization download epub role in twentieth-century photography. The text includes beautifully reproduced images from his most iconic series such as Brooklyn Gang, East 100th Street, Subway, and Time of Change: Civil Rights Photographs, along with never-before-seen archival material from Davidson's private archive. Davidson's photographs reveal his curiosity about, and empathy for, his subjects; whether he is documenting circuses, gangs, East Harlem tenements, Jewish cafeterias, Welsh miners, or Central Park, Davidson imbues his work with an eye for narrative. His pictures tell stories-and he lets them speak for themselves. The result is a comprehensive and elegantly presented portrait of an artist's life and work.

Windows 10 in easy steps provides full-colour and comprehensive coverage of the new operating system and shows how to get the most out of it, whether you are using a desktop computer or a mobile device. It covers the new features, and includes: James' career as the world's pre-eminent crime writer. Will there be peace? Will there be war? Find out with Mundane Astrology. Here, in one volume, are three classic books on the astrology of nations and states, by H.S. Green, Raphael, and C.E.O. Carter: H.S. Green organizes his book planet-by- planet. He tells what each planet will do in the 12 houses. Raphael organizes the topic by house. He tells how mundane houses work when planets are in them. In addition, both authors deal with solar and lunar eclipses, and earthquakes. Green shows the effects of eclipses in the houses, while Raphael describes them by decanate (100 sections of the zodiac). Both mention the effects of comets, although little about these mysterious bodies is known astrologically. Charles Carter, writing after WWII, discusses why astrologers failed to predict the war and what that means for mundane astrology. His plea for better data has largely been met, but the need for more study remains. All three authors give astrological rulerships for countries and cities. These are centuries old and are weighted to England and Europe. Carter's rulers are the most up-to-date. These are the essential texts for serious study of mundane astrology. About the Authors H.S. Green was an astrologer associated with Alan Leo's astrological revival back in the first decade of the 20th century. His various books are highly regarded (all but this one out of print, sadly), but biographical details are sketchy. Raphael was the pen-name of one Robert Cross, 1850-1923. He was the sixth in a series of astrological writers who used the name "Raphael" & remains the best known of them all. He wrote books on virtually all astrological topics. His book on mundane astrology dates from 1910. Charles E.O. Carter, 1887-1968, was one of the outstanding British astrologers of the 20th century. He succeeded Alan Leo as head of the Astrological Lodge of the Theosophical Society, a post he held from 1920 to 1952. He was editor of Astrology, The Astrologer's Quarterly, Holy Bible-CEV download PDF from 1926 to 1959. Carter's persistent genius reestablished astrology as a serious discipline in England, after two centuries of decline. He wrote his book on Mundane Astrology in reaction to the failure of astrologers to forecast WWII. In 1939, astrologers in London knew there was a full-scale war on in China, they knew the situation with Germany was tense, but they had studied the charts for the year, they knew the fuss would blow over. And they were wrong. Carter set out to discover why, his book was the result.

Road to Valour: Gino Bartali - Tour De France Legend and World War Two Hero download book

Aili McConnon,Andres Mcconnon: Road to Valour: Gino Bartali - Tour De France Legend and World War Two Hero

Road to Valour: Gino Bartali - Tour De France Legend and World War Two Hero

Description

ROAD TO VALOUR is the inspiring, against-the-odds story of Gino Bartali, the cyclist who made the greatest comeback in Tour de France history and continues to hold the record for the longest time-span between victories. Yet what ensured his permanent place in Italian hearts and minds were his actions in between, when he secretly aided the Italian Resistance during World War II. Aili and Andres McConnon chronicle Bartali's journey, starting in impoverished rural Tuscany where a scrawny, mischievous boy painstakingly saves his money to buy a bicycle, and before long is racking up wins throughout the country. At the age of 24, he stuns the world by winning the Tour de France, becoming an international sports icon in the process. But Mussolini's Fascists hijack his victory for propaganda purposes, derailing Bartali's career, and as the Nazis occupy Italy, Bartali undertakes dangerous missions to help those being targeted. He shelters a family of Jews in an apartment he financed with his cycling winnings and is able to smuggle counterfeit identity documents hidden in his bicycle past Nazi checkpoints under the guise of being a national hero in training. After the gruelling wartime years, Bartali fights to rebuild his career as Italy emerges from the rubble. Despite numerous setbacks and a legendary snowstorm in the Alps, the chain-smoking, Chianti-loving, 34-year-old underdog comes back and wins the most difficult endurance competition on earth - the Tour de France. Bartali's inspiring performance helps unite his fractured homeland and restore pride and spirit to a country still reeling from war and despair. Based on nearly ten years of research in Italy, France, and Israel, including interviews with Bartali's family, former teammates, a Holocaust survivor Bartali saved, and many others, this is the first book ever written about Bartali in English and the only book written in any language to fully explore the scope of Bartali's wartime work. Road to Valour is the breathtaking account of one man's unsung heroism and his resilience in the face of adversity. An epic tale of courage, comeback and redemption, it is the untold story of one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century.

The "New York Times" bestselling Magic Tree House series has a brand-new paperback! It's a spaceship from the past - can it change the future? Aquila has been found by boys bunking off a geography field trip. They have no idea where it came from or what it does. But Geoff's discovered that when you sit in it these little coloured lights come on, and if you push one of the big blue oneS ...WHOOSH! Bestselling author Patrick Carman pushes the Road to Valour: Gino Bartali - Tour De France Legend and World War Two Hero free download pdf vbook to the next level with this thrilling book/video/web experience. Wright's book is brilliant; a fascinating rumination on the hubris at the heart of human development and the pitfalls we still may have time to avoid. Examining mathematics, politics, theology, and architecture, the book demonstrates the continuing relevance of the ancient world. "Publishers Weekly"

Black Jack Volume 1

Description

Black Jack is a mysterious and charismatic young genius surgeon who travels the world performing amazing and impossible medical feats. Though a trained physician, he refuses to accept a medical license due to his hatred and mistrust of the medical community's hypocrisy and corruption. This leads Black Jack to occasional run-ins with the authorities, as well as from gangsters and criminals who approach him for illegal operations. Black Jack charges exorbitant fees for his services, the proceeds from which he uses to fund environmental projects and to aid victims of crime and corrupt capitalists. But because Black Jack keeps his true motives secret, his ethics are perceived as questionable and he is considered a selfish, uncaring devil. The Black Jack series is told in short stories. Each volume will contain 16-20 stories, each running approximately 20-24 pages in length. "Black Jack "is recognized as Osamu Tezuka's third most famous series, after "Astro Boy "and "Kimba, the White Lion."

Description

"NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER In the far future, humans have colonized a distant planet, home to the enigmatic Ariekei, sentient beings famed for a language unique in the universe, one that only a few altered human ambassadors can speak. Avice Benner Cho, a human colonist, has returned to Embassytown after years of deep-space adventure. She cannot speak the Ariekei tongue, but she is an indelible part of it, having long ago been made a figure of speech, a living simile in their language. When distant political machinations deliver a new ambassador to Arieka, the fragile equilibrium between humans and aliens is violently upset. Catastrophe looms, and Avice is torn between competing loyalties: to a husband she no longer loves, to a system she no longer trusts, and to her place in a language she cannot speak but which speaks through her, whether she likes it or not."

Change the Way You Eat: The Psychology of Food

Description

For many people, food is no longer something to 'enjoy' as the stuff that nurtures us, keeps us healthy. It's something to 'control', 'do battle with', all in a warped quest to 'be thin' and live up to society's photoshopped ideals. Plus there's the obesity epidemic where we've trained our tastebuds to crave the fat, salt and sugar that so much junk food is saturated with. By examining the psychological factors that encourage us to eat more than we know we should, as well as the tricks used by marketers to influence what and how much we eat, 'Change the Way You Eat' provides the tools for readers to take ownership of their eating choices so that lifelong change can take place. Discover how: * our stage of life, gender, financial resources and values all influence our food choices * branding, packaging and labelling combine to manipulate our shopping habits * our inbuilt taste preferences can determine the food we're drawn to, and how to reprogram them * our environment - from the type of music playing while we eat to the number of people we eat with - can all affect our eating habits * our personality and emotions can determine our food choices and habits, and * we can implement our newfound knowledge to take back control of our plate, become conscious eaters and gain real enjoyment from nourishing ourselves in a way that promotes long-term health and happiness.

Jon G. Allen: Coping with Trauma: Hope Through Understanding

Coping with Trauma: Hope Through Understanding

Description

Combining years of research, teaching, and experience treating trauma survivors, Dr. Jon G. Allen offers compassionate and practical guidance to understanding trauma and its effects on the self and relationships. Coping With Trauma is based on more than a decade of Dr. Allen's experience conducting educational groups for persons struggling with psychiatric disorders stemming from trauma. Written for a general audience, this book does not require a background in psychology. Readers will gain essential knowledge to embark on the process of healing from the complex wounds of trauma, along with a guide to current treatment approaches. In this supportive and informative work, readers will be introduced to and encouraged in the process of healing by an author who is both witness and guide. This clearly written, insightful book not only teaches clinicians about trauma but also, equally important, teaches clinicians how to educate their patients about trauma. Reshaped by recent developments in attachment theory, including the importance of cumulative stress over a lifetime, this compelling work retains the author's initial focus on attachment as he looks at trauma from two perspectives. From the psychological perspective, the author discusses the impact of trauma on emotion, memory, the self, and relationships, incorporating research from neuroscience to argue that trauma is a physical illness. From the psychiatric perspective, the author discusses various trauma-related disorders and symptoms: depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and dissociative disorders, along with a range of self-destructive behaviors to which trauma can make a contribution. Important updates include substantive and practical information on * Emotion and emotion regulation, prompted by extensive contemporary research on emotion -- which is becoming a science unto itself.* Illness, based on current developments in the neurobiological understanding of trauma.* Depression, a pervasive trauma-related problem that poses a number of catch-22s for recovery.* Various forms of self-destructiveness -- substance abuse, eating disorders, and deliberate self-harm -- all construed as coping strategies that backfire.* Suicidal states and self-defeating aspects of personality disorders. The author addresses the challenges of healing by reviewing strategies of emotion regulation as well as a wide range of sound treatment approaches. He concludes with a new chapter on the foundation of all healing: maintaining hope. This exceptionally comprehensive overview of a wide range of traumatic experiences, written in nontechnical language with extensive references to both classic and contemporary theoretical, clinical, and research literature, offers a uniquely useful guide for victims of trauma, their family members, and mental health care professionals alike.

Max Lucado: Glory Days: Living Your Promised Land Life Now

Glory Days: Living Your Promised Land Life Now

Description

New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado invites readers to leave the wilderness and discover a life defined by grace, refined by challenge, and aligned with a heavenly call. By studying the life of Joshua and the biblical book that bears his name, Lucado reveals God's promises for every step and reminds readers that God still fights for them. The wilderness. Maybe you know it well. The Israelites sure did. After all, they spent forty years wandering the desert. Victories were scarce. Progress was slow. They were free from Pharaoh but not free from fear. Saved but stuck. Sounds a lot like midlife misery. Caught in a rut. Stalled out. Running on empty. Are you mired in the same? You can name the day you became a Christian and escaped Egypt. But you can't remember the last time you defeated a temptation or experienced an answered prayer. You're fighting the same battles you fought the day you came to Christ. You're out of Egypt, but Egypt's not out of you. Isn't the Christian life supposed to be better than this? Jesus offers abundant joy. Yet you live with oppressive grief. The epistles speak of grace. You shoulder guilt. You are more than a conqueror yet are commonly conquered by temptation or weaknesses. But there's good news. With God's help you can close the gap between the person you are and the person you want to be. Like Joshua and the Israelites, you can move from a wilderness existence into a promised inheritance. This is God's vision for your life. You, at full throttle. You, as you were intended. You, as victor over the Jerichos and giants. You, minus the stumbles, hurts, and hate. You and your Promised Land life.
